WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (19-13) used 25 combined hits and a total of 20 runs scored to ease past visiting John Jay (8-17) in a softball doubleheader April 17. WP earned a 12-4, five-inning win during the opening game, and posted an 8-0, six-inning victory during the night cap.
The Pioneers took control of the first game during their very first at-bat, scoring six times thanks to five singles, a walk and three Bloodhound errors. Freshman
Rayna Caruso's (Madison, N.J./Madison) RBI-single in the second made it a 7-0 score, and junior
Ana Abourashed's (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) two-run single up the middle helped WP extend its advantage to 11-0 in the bottom of the third.
Nina Chao singled in Arlene Pena for John Jay's first run of the day in the top of the fourth, but WP responded with a single run during the bottom half of the inning after a
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./David Brearley) sacrifice fly. The Bloodhounds finished the Game One scoring with a three-run Danielle Bonici triple.
Freshman
Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) earned the victory inside the circle, improving to 3-2 after allowing four runs and four hits, striking out six in 5.0 innings. Angela Lam took the loss for John Jay (4-8), giving up 11 hits and 11 runs (nine earned) in 3.0 innings.
Sophomore
Kate Braun (Philadelphia, Pa./Gloucester Catholic) led the WP offense with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring three runs. Abourashed, Caruso and senior Ka
thleen Wehmann (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) each had two hits, and Nadolny and Abourashed each had three RBI. Five different Bloodhounds accounted for John Jay's five hits.
During Game Two, William Paterson got on the scoreboard during the bottom of the first when
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) singled in Braun. The Pioneers added three runs in both the third and fourth innings for the 7-0 edge, and Nadolny's walk-off single scored Vitale in the sixth, giving the Pioneers an eight-run edge and ending the contest.
Vitale was 3-for-4 at the plate, adding a double, RBI and two runs scored. Braun was 2-for-3, scoring three times and hitting two doubles. Sophomore
Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) improved to 2-2, throwing a one-hitter and striking out five in 6.0 innings. Chao took the loss for John Jay (4-8), allowing the eight runs (three earned) and 13 hits in 5.2 innings.
William Paterson will return to NJAC action Saturday, April 19, playing a doubleheader at Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m.
