MADISON, N.J. – William Paterson (16-10) won its first game at Drew (14-14), 9-6, and freshman Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) threw a three-hitter for a five-inning 7-0 victory during the second game of the doubleheader April 10.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 7-0, second-inning lead during the first game, as William Paterson posted six runs during its first at-bat. Three runners crossed the plate after two errors by the pitcher, followed by a RBI-double from junior Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), a Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) run-scoring single and a RBI-single off the bat of Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.). Mendez then drew a bases-loaded walk during the top of the second for the 7-0 advantage.

A Kat Wehmann (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) single drove in Winkelspecht for an 8-0 Pioneer edge in the fifth, but the Rangers scored twice in the fifth and four more times in the sixth for an 8-6 score. Freshman Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) tacked on an insurance run with a RBI-double in the seventh, and WP reliever Jaclyn Reilly (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) induced three outs after facing four batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Abourashed was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Nadolny was 2-for-4 with a two-bagger, and Mendez was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs-batted-in. Senior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) earned the victory (9-3), allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings. Reilly pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up a hit and one earned run.

William Paterson scored all seven of its runs in the third inning of the night cap, thanks to four hits and three Drew errors. Junior Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double, and four other Pioneers each had a hit. Vitale improved to 4-4 inside the circle and picked up her second shutout of the year, striking out four without issuing a walk.

William Paterson will host Richard Stockton for a NJAC doubleheader Saturday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m.
