Softball Defeats Geneseo, Falls to Mount St. Joseph

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A pair of RBI-singles in the sixth gave the William Paterson softball team (6-2) a 3-2 victory against SUNY Geneseo March 19 at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers finished the day with an 8-5 loss to Mount St. Joseph.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, William Paterson's Katelyn Yard (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) drew a pinch-hit walk with the bases loaded in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1.

Then, in the top of the sixth after a Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) triple, freshman Kelly Lauter (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) singled her home, and pinch-hitter Casey Sierra (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) later singled through the left side of the infield to plate Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and give the Pioneers the lead.

Five different players accounted for the Pioneers' five hits. Senior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) allowed two unearned runs and five hits over 7.0 innings, striking out four to improve to 4-0 this season.

During the second game of the day, WP staked itself to a 2-0 lead in the third, thanks to RBI-hits by Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Lauter. Mount St. Joseph scored a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the score, but the Pioneers answered with three scores on four hits in the fifth.

Mount St. Joseph had five hits and a walk during its first six at-bats of the sixth inning, scoring six runs to secure the win.

Zippler was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored, while Lauter was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Stephanie Simonetty (Denville, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Freshman Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) and six hits in 5.0 innings. Freshman Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) accounted for 1.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits, and sophomore Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) threw the final 0.2 inning.

William Paterson will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday, March 20, taking on Westminster at 1:00 p.m. and St. Norbert at 5:00 p.m.
