Men's Swimmers Defeat MSMC, 98-67

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson swimming and diving teams swept visiting Mount St. Mary Feb. 5 at Wightman Pool, as the women (11-3) earned a 99-81 win, and the men (8-4) posted a 98-67 victory.
 
Junior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) led three double winners on the men's side, touching first in the 500 (5:14.7) and 1,000 (10:44.92) frees. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) won the 200 IM (2:13.81) and 100 breast (1:07.02), and classmate Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) finished first in the 100 (49.15) and 200 (1:05.33) frees. Sophomore Kevin Thomas (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) earned his first college victory with a time of 1:03.91 in the 100 back, freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 free (22.81), junior Michael O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) posted a victory in the one-meter dive (181.45), and freshman Dan O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) earned his first college win with a 177.40 total in the three-meter dive.
 
Junior Cathy Hartwell (TomsRiver, N.J./Toms River East) was one of three double winners for the WP women, touching first in the 100 (57.41) and 200 (2:06.76) frees. Classmate Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) won the 100 fly (1:04.65) and 100 back (1:06.33), and sophomore Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) was first in the one-meter (142.4) and three-meter (145.05) dives. Junior Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) posted a season-best time of 5:49.59 to win the 500 free, freshman Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) earned a victory in the 1,000 free (12:04.63), junior Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) touched first in the 50 free (27.15), and freshman Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) won the 200 IM (2:29.36).
 
The Pioneers will finish their dual-meet season with a home meet against MontclairState Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1:00 p.m.
