WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (7-1) used 5-for-11 (.455) shooting from three-point range and a 22-for-31 (.710) effort from the free-throw line to pull away from SUNY Old Westbury (3-4) for a 71-54 victory Dec. 13 at the Rec Center.
Following a first 20 minutes that featured four ties and three lead changes, the Pioneers entered halftime with a 23-17 edge, and that lead quickly grew to double digits thanks to a 7-3 run to begin the second half (30-20, 17:36). William Paterson's lead expanded to as many as 26 points following a 20-4 burst (52-26, 11:21), and the Panthers were able to get no closer than 11 for the remainder of the contest.
Junior guard
Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) led William Paterson in scoring for the second straight game, posting 22 points. He was 9-for-10 from the free-throw line during the second half, and made five of eight (.625) field goals overall. Junior guard
Bobby Dunn (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had 11 points and seven rebounds, junior forward
Chris Brown (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) chipped in 11 tallies and five boards, junior guard
Tim Lucas (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) added six points and six assists to his team-high nine rebounds, and senior guard
Courtney Nelson (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) dished a game-high eight assists.
Bill Reese led Old Westbury with 15 points, while John Hemingway posted 12 points and Lester Prosper collected a game-high 17 rebounds.
William Paterson will finish its pre-holiday schedule Friday, Dec. 19, at Lehman at 6:00 p.m.
