Courtney Nelson (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) scored a team-best 17 points and junior
Bobby Dunn (Garwood, N.J./Johnson Regional) added seven tallies and a game-high 12 rebounds as the William Paterson men's basketball team (2-0) earned a 73-65 victory against Wesleyan (0-1) in the first round of the Gordon College Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 21.
The Pioneers will face the winner of the Gordon/Oneonta State first-round contest Saturday, Nov. 22, in the championship game at 8:00 p.m.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, but the Pioneers responded with an 18-3 run to take a seven-point advantage (20-13, 7:45) as senior
Jordan Fowler (East Orange, N.J./Montclair) scored eight points during the outburst. After a Wesleyan spurt made it a 23-22 Cardinal edge (5:18), William Paterson again had an answer, scoring 16 of the final 27 points for a 38-34 halftime lead. William Paterson steadily built a 10-point bulge (53-43, 11:44) to begin the second period, and never led by less than five points for the remainder of the contest.
Fowler contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, while juniors
Tim Lucas (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and
Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) each added 11 tallies. William Paterson outrebounded Wesleyan 46-28, and made 82.1 (23-28) percent of its free throws.
Stan Grayson led Wesleyan with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin Scura scored 16 tallies.
