Volleyball Gets Back on Track, Defeats John Jay

Pioneers Earn 3-0 Win against Bloodhounds

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (11-4) got back on track and snapped a mini two-match losing streak by defeating visiting John Jay (4-17), 3-0, Oct. 9.

The first set was one marked by lengthy runs, started when the Bloodhounds scored five straight points to break a 5-5 tie. The Pioneers answered immediately by scoring nine consecutive points of their own off of the serve of senior Mailyn Rodriguez (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) to take a 14-10 lead, and never trailed again in an opening 25-18 victory.

Tied at 5-5 to begin the second set, William Paterson reeled off 11 unanswered points for a 16-5 advantage en route to a 25-11 win. The Pioneers finished the evening with a 25-13 win during the third set.

Freshman setter/outside hitter Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) had 19 assists, 11 digs and five service aces for WP, while junior middle hitter Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) collected 17 kills and three block solos. Sophomore setter Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) added 11 assists. As a group, the Pioneers served 12 aces and hit .222.

Junior Tatyana Yachnik led John Jay with six kills. Classmate Andrea Medina posted a match-best 14 digs for the Bloodhounds.

William Paterson will celebrate Homecoming with a tri-match Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Rec Center. The Pioneers will face Brooklyn at 12:00 p.m., Brooklyn and New York City Tech will meet at 2:00 p.m., and WP will square off against New York City Tech at 4:00 p.m.
