Box Score
MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sophomore Katie Minervini fired a shot inside the left post from the top of the 18-yard box with 1:28 remaining in the second overtime as Montclair State (8-8-1, 4-3-1 NJAC) scored the final two goals in a 2-1 victory over local rival William Paterson (10-4-1, 4-3-1 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at Sprague Field Oct. 25.
Senior midfielder Nicole Kogut scored the tying goal with less than a minute remaining as the Red Hawks solidified their position for the NJAC Tournament. The win vaulted MSU into a fourth-place tie with William Paterson, and both teams have one game conference contest remaining. In order to be among the top six teams and qualify for the NJAC Tournament, the Pioneers need a victory in their final regular-season match (Oct. 29 vs. Richard Stockton), or a loss by Rutgers-Newark in either of its two remaining contests (Oct. 26 at Rowan, Oct. 29 vs. TCNJ).
Sophomore
Drea Wagoner (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) scored for William Paterson, which has now dropped two straight and came within 48 seconds of capturing its first win against Montclair since 2003.
Wagoner's goal with eight seconds remaining in the first half appeared as if it would be the only score in the game, but Montclair would tie the match as Kogut gathered a ball on the right sideline from 25 yards out and lofted a shot from a tough angle that caught goalkeeper
Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) off guard. The ball went over Baker's head and bounced into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
Neither team got a chance to win the match during the first overtime, and it appeared that it would remain deadlocked after the second OT period until Montclair intercepted a clearing pass and pushed the ball toward the end line. Freshman Rachel Senyszyn crossed a ball from the left side that hit a WP defender. The ball came out to Minervini, who settled it before firing her shot into the back of the net for the game winner.
Montclair State had two of the best scoring chances of the first 45 minutes. Symone Seldon got a clear shot from in close on the right side that was blocked by
Dana Bertoli (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills). The ball would bounce across to the other side, where Jen Kelleher had another opportunity that Baker came back across the line to stop.
William Paterson would get the lone goal of the period in the closing seconds as the Pioneers were awarded a free kick from just inside midfield.
Kathleen Maggi (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) sent a ball into the box that looked like it would be scooped up by Leah Tepperman. However, the ball took a fortuitous bounce off the wet turf over the goalkeeper's head and toward the goal line where Wagoner was able to knock it in for her second goal of the season.
Tepperman finished with three saves, while Baker made four. Montclair State held the edges in both shots (8-7) and corner kicks (5-4).
William Paterson will host Richard Stockton on Senior Night Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 5:00 p.m.
