Volleyball Eases Past Mount Saint Mary, 3-0

Pioneers Serve 14 Aces in Victory

The Pioneers used 14 service aces to defeat MSMC, 3-0.

WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) posted 13 kills, 12 assists and seven digs to lead the William Paterson volleyball team (14-5) to a 3-0 victory against visiting Mount Saint Mary (8-15) Oct. 16.

The Pioneers jumped out to an 8-1 lead on their way to a 25-7 victory during the first set thanks to seven service aces, including three straight by senior Mailyn Rodriguez (Hackensack, N.J./ Hackensack). William Paterson then built a 17-9 edge during the second set, but the Blue Knights fought back to within three at 20-17. The Pioneers won five of the final six points, led by three kills by Maher, for a 25-18 win. Trailing by six, the Blue Knights rallied to pull even at 16-16 during the third set, but kills by Chi Chi Okeke (Newark, N.J./Science Park), Maher and Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) pushed William Paterson ahead 19-16, and the Pioneers' lead never dipped below two as they clinched the match with a 25-18 victory.

Helfrich had 12 kills and three aces, sophomore Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) collected a match-best 16 assists, junior Amanda Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) tallied nine digs, and Rodriguez finished with five of WP's 14 service aces. William Paterson hit .316 for the match, compared to MSMC's .055 effort.

Courtney Kenney paced the Blue Knights with five kills. Freshman Alyssa Zmuda had a team-best six digs, and tied with Katie Toole for the team lead with seven assists.

William Paterson will compete at the Gothic Knights Invitational Saturday, Oct. 18, at New Jersey City. The Pioneers will face York (N.Y.) at 11:00 a.m. and CCNY at 1:00 p.m., followed by pool championship play at 3:00 or 5:00 p.m.
