OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - After taking a 44-19 lead in the first half, the William Paterson men's basketball team (9-3, 1-0 NJAC) sailed to a 77-48 victory at SUNY College at Old Westbury (4-8) Jan. 9 at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Pioneers took an early lead in the first-half, shooting .826 (19-23) percent from the field while the Panthers connected on 8-of-18 attempts (.444). Freshman guard Gabriel Paul (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) scored nine of his game-high 12 points in the first half, finishing 5-of-7 overall and adding six rebounds. Sophomore Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) added 10 points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.
The Pioneers shot .646 (31-48) percent overall, adding a .500 (5-10) percent effort from the three-point range while out-rebounded the Panthers 31-24. The two teams combined for 42 turnovers, including 20 by the Pioneers.
Garthlette James kept pace for the Panthers, connecting on a three-pointer to bring the Panthers within four points, 21-17 with 7:56 in the first-half until the Pioneers went on an 18-0 run. James led the Panthers in scoring with 25 points, three rebounds and two steals.
William Paterson will resume New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Saturday, Jan. 12, hosting Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m.
