Field Hockey Loses to No. 10 Rowan on Stroke, 3-2

Meghan Hall scored twice to force overtime against No. 10 Rowan.

Box Score

WAYNE , N.J. – A penalty stroke awarded to No. 10 Rowan (4-2, 1-0 NJAC) with 4:11 remaining in overtime was the difference as the Profs defeated William Paterson (4-4, 0-1 NJAC), 3-2, in field hockey action Sept. 21 at Wightman Stadium

William Paterson owned the first possession of the game, but it was Rowan who controlled the next 20 minutes of play with six penalty corners and four shots. A quality chance by senior Danielle Herbek (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) with 15 minutes on the clock seemed to spark the Pioneers, and William Paterson had several chances during the closing minutes, including a Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) breakaway from midfield during the final four minutes of the period.

Rowan's Danielle Miranda finally broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute when Pioneer goalie Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) came out to save an Erin Tideman shot and Miranda poked the rebound past two WP defenders on the goal line, giving the Profs a 1-0 edge.

Rachel Cheafsky finished a Tideman pass on a penalty corner to push the Profs ahead 2-0 in the 53 rd minute. However, Hall brought the Pioneers roaring back, finishing a Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) assist three minutes later, and redirecting a shot in front of goal with 8:38 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 2-2.

Rowan's pressure during the overtime period paid off when the Profs were awarded a penalty stroke with 4:11 on the clock, this after the Pioneers tried to snuff out a Susan Massara shot. Sophomore Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) came out of her field position and into the goal, but Miranda's shot to the lower-left got past Winkelspecht, giving the Profs the victory.

Auger made seven saves for the Pioneers, and Amanda Cucinotti had four stops for Rowan.

The Pioneers will next play Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Eastern at 4:00 p.m.
