MAHWAH , N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (3-0) started its season with a tremendous effort at the New Jersey Athletic Conference/Skyline Crossover Sept. 2 at Ramapo, sweeping its way to three victories.
In the opening match of the day, the Pioneers defeated SUNY Old Westbury30-27, 30-17 and 30-24. Sophomore
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had eight kills, three service aces and two block solos, while senior
Tamara Miller (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added eight kills and three aces, and classmate
Dana Hansen (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) chipped in five kills and nine assists.
William Paterson earned a 30-21, 30-26, 30-28 win against SUNY Farmingdale as both Helfrich and Miller put down 10 kills apiece. Junior
Mailyn Rodriguez (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) added a team-best 14 digs in the winning effort.
To wrap up the day, the Pioneers swept St. Joseph's-Long Island (30-26, 30-19, 30-28). Hansen was outstanding for WP with her 16 kills, 21 assists and three block solos. Helfrich had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, Miller nearly matched her with nine kills and 10 digs, and senior
Samantha Morgan (Clearfield, Pa./ Clearfield) posted six kills and three block solos. Also key to the victories were sophomores
Amanda Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and
Samantha Reed (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), who provided excellent back-row play with their defense and service games.
The Pioneers will play their first home match of the season Tuesday, Sept. 4, against St. Elizabeth at 7:00 p.m.
