WAYNE , N.J. – Trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five match, the William Paterson volleyball team (7-1) fought back for a 3-2 victory against visiting Baruch (1-8) Sept. 13 at the Rec Center.
Trailing 21-22 late in the first game, the Pioneers scored three straight points off senior
Dana Hansen's (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), taking a lead they would not relinquish in winning Game One, 30-25. The Bearcats answered by jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the second game, thanks to the serving of Nicole Baruffaldi (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), eventually winning by a score of 30-15. Baruch scored the final two points to win the third game 30-28, but the Pioneers evened the match with a 30-27 victory in Game Four. With the score knotted at 8-8 in the fifth and deciding game, William Paterson scored seven of the final eight points, winning the match with a 15-9 victory.
Sophomore
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) led the Pioneer charge with 17 kills, 12 digs and three block solos. Hansen chipped in 12 kills, 17 assists and seven digs, and sophomore
Samantha Reed (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) posted 17 digs. Senior
Tamara Miller (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) paced WP with 18 digs, adding nine kills, while freshman
Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had 12 assists.
William Paterson will play a pair of matches at St. Joseph's-Long Island Saturday, Sept. 15. The Pioneers will take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at 12:00 p.m., followed by the host Golden Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
