WAYNE , N.J. – In a pair of back-and-forth contests, No. 12 Ramapo (16-4, 5-1 NJAC) swept a softball doubleheader at William Paterson (16-8, 3-3 NJAC), 10-8 (eight innings) and 3-2, April 9.

A Kelly Schriber RBI single, Marilee Farmer run-scoring double and Leah Mondadori RBI single gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings in the first game of the afternoon. The Pioneers responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior April Sardinas-Wyssling (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) singled to short to plate Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), followed by a two-run single up the middle by senior Jamie Fields (Galloway, N.J./Absegami). Pinch hitter Kaitlyn Lang (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock–North) later singled up the middle, scoring Fields and giving the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.

Farmer's single in the top of the sixth scored another run for Ramapo, tying the score at 4-4 and eventually forcing extra innings. Gemma Chalkley was the runner placed on second to begin the inning, but it appeared that she might get stranded after the Pioneer defense recorded outs for the first two batters. But, a single put runners on the corners, and WPU decided to intentionally walk Beth Choma to load the bases and create a force-out. Instead, with two outs and a 0-2 count, Farmer blasted a home run over the fence in left-center field, a grand slam that broke the 4-4 tie. A Schriber solo shot, as well as a RBI walk drawn by Jen Vitorino, gave the Roadrunners a 10-4 edge.

The Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but could not find a way to tie the contest. Fields drove in two of the scores with her first home run of the season.

Reilly, Sardinas-Wyssling and Fields each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers, and Fields drove in four runs for WPU. Schriber was 4-for-5 with two RBI, and Farmer was 3-for-5 with the eighth-inning grand slam, to lead the Roadrunners.

Katie Norton allowed 11 hits and eight runs (four earned) to pick up the victory for Ramapo (7-2). Junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) suffered the loss (10-2), surrendering 18 hits, 10 runs (seven earned) and two walks while striking out seven in 7.2 innings. Freshman Amy Sievert (Matawan, N.J./ Old Bridge) threw the final 0.1 inning for William Paterson.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored runs in the top of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Sardinas-Wyssling scampered home on a wild pitch, and senior Alicia Albert (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) drove in a score with a single to second base. Lauren Cascino cut that lead in half with a RBI triple in the bottom of the third, and Choma's two-run homer in the sixth gave the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Marissa Marino tossed 7.0 innings for Ramapo, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out five (8-1). Freshman Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) gave up six hits and three runs (zero earned) in 6.0 innings for William Paterson (3-3).

Ramapo was ranked 12 th, and the Pioneers received six votes (31st), in last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
