POMONA, N.J. – Richard Stockton (18-8, 5-5 NJAC) and William Paterson (19-9, 6-4 NJAC) split a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader April 14. William Paterson won the opener, 4-0, but Stockton rebounded to win the nightcap, 4-3.
In game one, Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) pitched a four-hit shutout for the Pioneers. Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) blasted a three-run homer in the third inning and Casey Sierra (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Suzanne Gorczynski was 2-for-3 with a double for Stockton.
Gorczynski and Melissa Kerr each had two hits in the nightcap to lead Stockton to a 4-3 victory. Pitcher Kaitlyn Corica picked up the win in relief, allowing just one run on one hit over the final five innings. For William Paterson, Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI, while Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
Jessica Williams doubled home two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 Stockton lead. William Paterson rallied behind Zippler's RBI triple in the second frame, and a two-run triple by Reilly in the third for a 3-2 lead. In the fifth inning, Gorczynski and Kerr singled and later scored on a dropped fly ball to shallow left field off the bat of Williams to put Stockton back on top 4-3, which would be the final score of the game.
William Paterson will host Kean in a twinbill on Tuesday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m.
