PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The William Paterson softball team began its season at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic March 9 in Panama City Beach, Fla. The Pioneers fell to Central (Iowa), 3-1, in their first game of the day, and lost to Willamette (Ore.), 9-1, in their second contest.
Against Central, senior Jamie Fields (Galloway, Absegami) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and run scored, while classmate April Sardinas-Wyssling (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) struck out three in 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run.
In the second game, freshman Jessica Reibis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) led the offensive effort with a 2-for-2 performance.
The Pioneers received 19 votes (26th) in the first NFCA Top 25 Poll of the season (March 8).
William Paterson will take on No. 7 Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, before beginning bracket play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m.
