WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (5-1) charged out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Wilkes (3-1) 77-47 Dec. 5 at the Rec Center.
Following a 12-0 run to begin the contest, the Pioneers' lead never dipped below six points during the first half, and William Paterson entered the locker room with a 33-19 lead. That advantage quickly ballooned to almost 30, as the Pioneers began the second stanza with a 22-7 spurt (55-26, 12:38), as WP shot 60.0 (30-50) percent for the game, and 53.3 (8-15) percent from three-point range. The Pioneers outscored the Colonels 14-2 in fast-break points, 40-8 in the paint, and 32-18 off turnovers.
Senior Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) scored 16 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, and connected on eight of 11 (.727) field goals while collecting six assists and four steals. Sophomore forward Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) had his second straight double-double, making all seven of his shots for 15 points while adding 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Sophomore Al-Basser Holloway (Union, N.J./Newark East Side) added eight points and four assists in 18 minutes off the bench.
Chris DeRojas paced the Colonels with 18 points.
William Paterson will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Saturday, Dec. 8, at Kean at 3:00 p.m.
