WAYNE, N.J. – After jumping out to a 25-2 lead, the William Paterson men's basketball team (4-1) cruised to a 76-33 victory against visiting City College of New York (0-5) Dec. 1 at the Rec Center. The 33 points allowed by WP established a new program record for the Pioneer defense, one better than the previous low of 34 (at CCNY, 12/20/05), as did the seven opponent field goals allowed (8, at Hunter, 12/11/04).
After the Beavers scored the game's opening basket, William Paterson put together a 25-0 run to take early control of the contest. CCNY did not score a point for nearly 11 minutes, finally converting a pair of free throws at the 8:24 mark (25-4), and went without a field goal for 12:52, a streak snapped by a Franklin Canales three-pointer (27-10, 6:58).
The Pioneers shot 57.7 (15-26) percent from the field in the first half, including a 5-for-9 (.556) effort from beyond the arc, to enter the locker room with a 47-19 lead. William Paterson also turned 19 Beaver first-half turnovers into 22 points, and outscored CCNY in the paint, 18-0, during the first 20 minutes.
William Paterson began the second stanza with a 19-5 burst (65-24, 12:21) to open up a 41-point lead. For the game, the Pioneers shot 26-of-51 (.510) from the floor, converted 29 CCNY turnovers into 32 points, and owned a 34-0 edge in points scored in the paint.
Sophomore forward Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) registered his first career double-double in just 22 minutes of action, collecting game bests of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) had 13 points. Senior Jason Cameron (Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) dished a game-best five assists, and sophomores Al-Basser Holloway (Union, N.J./Newark East Side) and Bobby Dunn (Garwood, N.J./Johnson Regional) each had four steals.
Sophomore Froilan Vazquez scored all nine of his points in the first half to lead CCNY.
William Paterson will finish a three-game homestand Wednesday, Dec. 5, against Wilkes at 8:00 p.m.
