Pioneers Shoot Their Way to 69-58 Win against John Jay

Spiegel Paces WP with 18 Points, Five Assists

WAYNE, N.J. – Ten three-pointers helped give the William Paterson men's basketball team (3-1) a 69-58 victory against John Jay (3-2) in the Pioneers' home opener Nov. 28. 

Senior Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half, shooting 5-for-6 (.833) from the field as the Pioneers ended the opening stanza with a 17-7 run to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room. William Paterson used its outside shooting to score 15 points during the first half (5-of-15 three-pointers), and the Pioneers' defensive pressure forced 13 turnovers during the first 20 minutes, resulting in 13 tallies.

The Bloodhounds never got closer than eight points after the intermission, as William Paterson was 5-for-7 (.714) from beyond the arc in the second half and 12-of-17 (.706) overall. For the game, the Pioneers made 10 of 22 (.455) three-point attempts and also outscored John Jay in the paint, 26-18.

Sophomore forward Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) added five rebounds and three blocked shots to his 15 points, while classmate Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) was 4-for-5 (.800) from three, scoring 13 points. Spiegel led WP with five assists, and senior Seve Cousins (Haledon, N.J./ St. Joseph's Regional) posted four assists and a game-high four steals.

Senior Alex Valerio led the Bloodhounds with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Vaughn Mason added 12 tallies.

William Paterson will finish the week with a home game against CCNY Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1:00 p.m.
