POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After trailing 20-19 at the half, the William Paterson men's basketball team (1-1) exploded in the second half, running away with a 64-35 victory against Baruch (0-2) in the consolation game of the Vassar Tipoff Tournament Nov. 17.
William Paterson's Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) scored the second half's first two baskets, sparking a 9-2 run to put the Pioneers ahead 28-22 just two minutes into the period. From that point, William Paterson never lost its lead, opening up a 20-point margin with six minutes to play.
Although William Paterson only shot 38.7 (24-62) percent from the field for the game, the Pioneers controlled points in the paint, 30-6. The Pioneers also locked down their defensive pressure in the second half, including a span from 16:10 to 7:42 during which Baruch did not score as William Paterson went on a 17-0 run. The Pioneers also took advantage of 27 Baruch turnovers, converting those miscues into 30 points.
Senior Seve Cousins (Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) had 14 points and seven steals for William Paterson. Freshman Gabriel Paul (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) earned all-tournament team honors after scoring 11 points, while senior Jason Cameron (Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) had 10 tallies. Senior Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) added team bests of 10 rebounds and seven assists.
William Paterson will play at New York City Tech Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 6:00 p.m.
