Three-Pointer at Buzzer Sinks Pioneers in Opener, 74-71

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A three-pointer at the buzzer spoiled William Paterson's (0-1) bid for a victory in the season opener, as the Pioneers lost to Emerson (1-0), 74-71, in the opening round of the Vassar Tipoff Tournament Nov. 16.

Sophomore Al-Basser Holloway's (Union, N.J./Newark East Side) jumper tied the score at 71-71 with five seconds remaining, but Emerson's Will Dawkins drained a three as time expired to win the contest.

The Pioneers led 35-22 at halftime, and owned an 11-point edge (49-38) with 11:47 to play, but Emerson put together a 15-3 run to take a one-point advantage (53-52, 7:41). William Paterson did not lead again until Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) completed a three-point play with 51 seconds on the clock (69-68).

Spiegel paced WP with 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Freshman Gabriel Paul (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) had 10 points in his college debut, and senior Seve Cousins (Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) collected six assists.

William Paterson will face Baruch in the Vassar Tipoff Tournament consolation game Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1:00 p.m.
