NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore middle hitter
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had a match-high nine kills to lead a balanced William Paterson (15-5, 3-3 NJAC) attack as the Pioneers downed Rutgers-Newark (1-14, 0-4 NJAC), 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball match Oct. 9 in The Golden Dome.
Senior setter
Dana Hansen (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added six kills and two aces to go along with 18 assists for WPU, while senior outside hitter
Tamara Miller (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) posted a match-high 16 digs. Freshman setter
Jill Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) chipped in four of the Pioneers' 13 service aces, as well as eight assists.
Rutgers-Newark got seven kills, an ace and seven digs from sophomore outside hitter Sagan Caldwell. Freshman Loretta Fitzgibbons had a team-high 10 digs and five kills.
In game one, a Caldwell kill followed by back-to-back attack errors by William Paterson evened the score at 18-all before a timeout by the Pioneers. Bronowich had three aces during a decisive 8-0 run to carry WPU to a 30-19 win.
The Pioneers dominated play the rest of the way finishing with a .193 hitting percentage to the Raiders' -.174, winning games two and three by scores of 30-15 and 30-9.
William Paterson hosts Mount St. Mary in a non-conference tilt Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
