The William Paterson football team (4-4, 2-3 NJAC) will make the short trip to take on local rival Montclair State (6-2, 3-2 NJAC) Saturday, Nov. 3, at 6:00 p.m.
SCOUTING WILLIAM PATERSON
William Paterson is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this season following a 30-27 victory against Kean (3-5, 1-4 NJAC) Oct. 27.
Sophomore
John Woodson (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) leads the Pioneer offense, completing 14 of 27 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He made his first career start in last week's victory against Kean. Senior
Dan Lamego (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) has completed 72 of 140 passes for 815 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. Junior
Shaun Puluse (Haledon, N.J./Passaic Tech) has carried 122 times for a team-best 379 yards, adding three touchdownss, while senior
Ira Guilford (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken) has 277 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries. Sophomore
Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), the Sept. 16 ECAC Southeast Region and NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, has caught 22 passes for 311 yards and five touchdowns in seven appearances. Senior
Kareen Moon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) has caught 24 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker
Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) leads the Pioneers with 58 total tackles (35 solo), and has added two sacks and a pair of blocked kicks. Junior linebacker
Mike Lamego (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) has recorded 46 tackles (31 solo), two sacks and a pair of interceptions, while senior defensive lineman
Brian Burd (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury), the Oct. 14 NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, has made 45 tackles (25 solo, 12.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks), recovered a fumble, forced two fumbles and blocked a punt.
Senior
Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo), the Oct. 29 NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, has punted 58 times for 1,993 yards (34.4 average), landing 18 inside the 20-yard line to establish a new WP single-season record. He has also made eight of 11 field-goal attempts and 13 of 16 PATs.
The Pioneers returned seven offensive and five defensive starters from a 2006 team that posted a 1-9 overall record and a 1-6 mark in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. However, that record was a bit deceiving, as William Paterson had chances to win almost every ballgame. Five of the losing margins were seven or fewer points, and in back-to-back outings, William Paterson was defeated on the final play of the game. A field goal as time expired gave Western Connecticut a 20-17 win in Wayne Oct. 7, and an overtime touchdown lifted The College of New Jersey to a 27-21 victory Oct. 14. Injuries also played a major role, particularly under center. Three different Pioneers started at quarterback during the 2006 campaign, and a total of five different players called the signals during the 10-game schedule.
SCOUTING MONTCLAIR STATE
The Red Hawks are 6-2 overall and 3-2 in NJAC play this season following a 28-22 victory at Rowan (4-4, 2-3 NJAC) Oct. 27.
Senior Michael Jump leads the Montclair State offense, completing 108 of 231 passes for 1,521 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Senior Ryan McCoach has rushed 142 times for a team-best 585 yards and seven touchdowns, while junior A.J. Letizia has caught 24 passes for 512 yards and three touchdowns.
Junior linebacker Cornell Hunt has made 94 tackles (50 solo), including 7.0 for loss. Senior defensive back Derek DePascale has 57 total stops (29 solo) and two interceptions, while senior defensive back Mike Ajadi has added 50 total tackles (31 solo).
KRAUTMAN NAMED NJAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
William Paterson senior placekicker/punter
Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Special Teams Player of the Week Oct. 28 for his role in the Pioneers' 30-27 victory against Kean Oct. 27.
Krautman made his only field-goal attempt, a 21-yarder as time expired to lift WP to the win against the Cougars. He also punted five times for an average of 38.6 yards in blustery conditions, landing two inside the 20 to increase his own WP single-season record to 18, and kicked off twice for an average of 45.0 yards. Krautman connected on three of four PATs, scoring a total of six points for the Pioneers.
PIONEERS vs. RED HAWKS
William Paterson is 2-32-1 all time against Montclair State. The Red Hawks have won the last 13 meetings in the series, including a 44-9 decision last season in Wayne (Nov. 4). The Pioneers' last victory came in 1993, a 26-23 win at William Paterson.
