WAYNE , N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (16-5) rallied for a 3-2 victory against visiting Mount St. Mary (7-15) Oct. 11 at the Rec Center.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 22-16 lead in the first game, but the Blue Knights scored seven of the next eight points to tie the game at 23-23. William Paterson and Mount St. Mary battled back and forth, but with the score tied at 26-26, the Pioneers scored four unanswered points, punctuated by a Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) kill to give WPU a 30-26 victory.
Tied at 14-14 in the second game, William Paterson scored five straight points behind the serve of sophomore Samantha Reed (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) to take control and eventually earn a 30-18 win.
The Blue Knights fought back from a 25-28 deficit for a 30-28 game-three victory, and were out in front for most of game four, evening the match with a 30-25 win. It was a back-and-forth affair in the decisive game until MSMC pulled ahead, 14-12. However, William Paterson scored five of the final six points, winning game five 17-15.
Helfrich led the Pioneers with 18 kills and six block solos, adding 16 digs. Senior outside hitter Tamara Miller (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) had 12 kills and 20 digs, senior setter Dana Hansen (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added 10 kills, 19 assists and 16 digs, and Reed contributed 20 digs. Freshman setter Jill Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) dished out 14 assists for William Paterson.
Ashley Barnhart posted 18 kills and 26 digs for Mount St. Mary. Amanda Carfora added 13 kills and 12 digs, Katie Toole posted 45 assists and 10 digs, and Katie Goodrich chipped in 26 digs for the Blue Knights.
William Paterson will play four matches at the Gothic Knights Invitational Saturday, Oct. 13. The Pioneers will face York (N.Y.) at 9:00 a.m., host New Jersey City at 11:00 a.m., FDU-Florham at 3:00 p.m., and Lehman at 5:00 p.m.
