Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) scored twice and added an assist, leading William Paterson (6-3, 1-1 NJAC) to a 5-2 field hockey victory Sept. 30 at Richard Stockton (4-5, 1-1 NJAC).
The Pioneers, who failed to score a goal in their previous two games, exploded for a season-high five scores against the Ospreys. Freshman
Melissa Szeliga (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) broke the ice less than seven minutes into the contest, converting a pass from
Tina Londino (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) on a penalty corner. Nine minutes later,
Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) knocked in Winkelspecht's pass for William Paterson's second goal. Those two reversed roles with 15:59 remaining as Winkelspecht was the finisher this time, giving WPU a 3-0 lead.
Stockton answered with a pair of goals to cut the lead to 3-2 with 21:15 to play. However, WPU senior
Amie Shannon (Millville, N.J./Millville) scored an unassisted goal with less than nine minutes on the clock, and Winkelspecht put the finishing touches on the victory, scoring off a
Katie Jo Cipriani (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) assist in the final two minutes.
"In the first half I thought we were very dominant," said third-year WPU head coach
Lindsay Bard. "We really moved well up the field together as a unit, and the players were just relentless in front of the cage. Stockton was dominating the first 10-15 minutes of the second half and we were reacting to them instead of dictating the play. But, once we scored our fourth goal, I thought we shifted the momentum back in our favor for the rest of the game."
