MADISON, N.J. (NOVEMBER 18, 2006) - Senior 6-5 forward and all-American Luis Martinez (Passaic, N.J./Clifton) posted 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the No. 7 William Paterson men's basketball team (2-0) to a 55-37 victory against host Drew (1-1) in the championship game of the Rose City Classic Nov. 18.
WPU's defense held the Rangers to a 28.6 (12-42) percent shooting effort from the field, including a 2-for-20 (.100) night from beyond the three-point line. Drew failed to reach the 20-point mark in either half, scoring just 18 points during the first 20 minutes, and 19 after the break.
Junior 5-11 guard Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) joined Martinez on the All-Tournament Team, collecting 18 points and three steals.
The Pioneers were ranked seventh by d3hoops.com, third by DIII News and ninth by Street & Smith's in the groups' preseason national polls.
William Paterson will make its first appearance of the season at the Rec Center Tuesday, Nov. 21, hosting New York City Tech at 8:00 p.m.
