WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman tennis player Brittany LaBruna (Bloomingdale, N.J./Continental Academy) was named the Oct. 7 William Paterson Pioneer of the Week.
At the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Sept. 30, second-seeded LaBruna defeated fourth-seeded Jessica Bourque of Stevens in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the championship match against top-seeded Cristina Nunez from Ithaca. After winning the first set, 7-5, LaBruna dropped the second, 6-2. During the deciding third set, LaBruna came away with a 7-5 victory and the regional title. During an 8-1 win Oct. 2 against Kean, she and junior Kristy Daubert (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) defeated Jaelynn Lee and Dabra Dress at first doubles, 8-4, and LaBruna remained perfect at first singles (14-0) with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Dress.
