GALLOWAY, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (6-9, 0-2 NJAC) opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a doubleheader loss to Stockton (15-1, 2-0 NJAC) on March 29, falling 9-1 in six innings in game one before dropping game two, 6-2.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- William Paterson struck first in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Gianna Capone (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East). Junior Megan Tinger (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) then delivered an RBI single up the middle to bring Shortway home.
- Stockton answered in the bottom half of the inning with one run scored to even the game at 1-1.
- The Ospreys took the lead with four runs in the second inning to go ahead 5–1.
- Stockton added one run in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth to make the score 9–1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Tinger went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Senior Lilah Guthy (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) tallied two hits, a walk, and a stolen base.
- Shortway finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Stockton scored a run in the first inning to go ahead 1-0.
- The Ospreys scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings and added another in the fifth to take a 6–0 lead.
- Junior Molly Cocco (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) led off the sixth with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Shortway and a sacrifice bunt by Capone. Guthy delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Cocco (6-1) before Shortway stole home to cut the deficit to 6-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Shortway went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and one run scored.
- Sophomore Aubrey Miller (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester County Institute of Technology) and sophomore Courtney DiPrenda (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) each recorded a hit.
- Guthy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
