EWING, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (16-18, 9-9 NJAC) fell in both ends of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at The College of New Jersey (23-13, 15-3 NJAC). The Pioneers fell 11-1 in five innings in the opener, then dropped the second game 7-1.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- TCNJ took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning (3-0).
- The Lions added another run in the second and tacked on three more in the third, stretching their advantage to 7-0.
- A four-run surge in the fourth inning pushed TCNJ to an 11-0 mercy-rule win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) recorded one hit.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first inning, junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) singled to left field, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and came home on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.
- TCNJ answered in the bottom half, tying the game at 1-1 before tacking on another run to move ahead 2-1.
- The Lions added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Pioneers 7-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Senior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) finished with two hits in three at-bats.
- Shortway recorded one hit, and one run scored.
- Junior Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) went 1-for-3.
