Softball Bested by Stockton

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (11-13, 4-6 NJAC) dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader to Stockton (17-11, 5-5 NJAC) April 13 at the Pioneer Softball Field. The Pioneers fell 5-1 in the first game, before being topped 7-0 in game two.
 
Seniors Lindsey Acker (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford), Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston), Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford), and Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) were honored prior to the start of the games.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stockton got on the board in the third inning, taking a 1–0 lead, and tacked on another run in the fifth to extend their advantage to two (2-0).
  • In the bottom half of the fifth, the Pioneers responded to trim the deficit to one (2-1). Junior Taylor Palmieri (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) singled and moved to third on a bunt single by classmate Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg). Junior Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) then flied out to left field, allowing Palmieri to score. 
  • The Ospreys scored three runs in the sixth, extending their lead to 5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Palmieri went 2-for-3 and crossed the plate for the Pioneers.
  • Backo recorded an RBI.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ospreys broke the scoreless game with a run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead before adding another in the sixth to make it a two-run game.
  • Stockton pulled away in the seventh, scoring five runs to stretch the advantage to 7-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) finished 2-for-2 and drew two walks.
  • Guthy and Backo each recorded a hit for the Pioneers.
UP NEXT:
  • WP will travel to Kean for an NJAC doubleheader Tuesday, April 15, at 3:00 p.m.
