Softball Secures Two Wins At Home Over Mount Saint Vincent

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (7-7) swept Mount Saint Vincent (5-10) in a home doubleheader on March 27 at Pioneer Softball Park, powering their way to a 4-1 win in the opener and sealing the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) hit singles, with Shortway driving in Hutchison for the first run of the game (1-0).
  • Sophomore Samantha Campos (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) reached based on an error, moving Shortway to second. Junior Zoey Hagan (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson) then singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, while Campos moved up and Shortway scored (2-0). Guthy singled to left field, driving in Hagan and Campos to double WP's lead.
  • Mount Saint Vincent scored one run in the top of the sixth, but the Pioneers held onto their lead to capture a 4-1 victory in game one.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Hutchison finished 2-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Shortway hit 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and crossed the plate once for the Pioneers.
  • Guthy collected two hits in three at-bats including a double and drove in one run.
  • Hagan recorded a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Ciravolo pitched 5 innings, allowing one earned run.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the bottom of the second inning, junior Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) hit a single to third base, and junior Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) followed with a walk. Junior Taylor Palmieri (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) then laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Backo to second and Guthy to third.
  • Junior Gabriella Vazquez (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) singled, advancing Backo to third and scoring Guthy, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
  • Hutchison then singled to right field, advancing Vazquez to third and allowing Backo to score (2-0). Vazquez then tagged up on Schwark's sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game.
  • Campos then doubled to right field and reached third on a throwing error by the right fielder, driving in Hutchison to increase the Pioneer's lead to four.
  • The Dolphins scored in the top of the third inning, narrowing the gap to 4-1.
  • To lead off the bottom of the fourth, Campos and senior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) led off with singles. Shortway reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman; Campos was tagged out at second, but Schwark crossed the plate, bringing the score to 5-1.
  • Mount Saint Vincent tacked on one more run in the top of sixth, and the Pioneers maintained their lead for the remainder of the game to secure a 5-2 win in game two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Campos hit 3-for-4, recording a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Vazquez finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
  • Hutchison went 2-for-3 and drove one run in for the Pioneers.
  • Schwark batted 1-for-3 with an RBI and crossed the plate once for WP.
  • Senior Lindsay Acker pitched the bottom of the seventh inning, striking out two batters to secure the victory.

  • WP hosts Rutgers-Newark for their first conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m.
