Softball Drops Final Two Games at the Spring Games

CLERMONT, FL. – The William Paterson softball team (0-10) was edged by Wisconsin-Stevens Point (13-2), 4-3, and Manchester (6-4) 3-1, to close out the Spring Games on March 21.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Wisconsin-Stevens Point posted two runs in the first with a walk, stolen base, fielding error, and two doubles.
  • Sophomore Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) pitched a hitless second inning.
  • Senior Haley Weinberger (Williamstown, N.J./Hammonton) opened the bottom of the third with a single up the middle. Graduate student Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) bunted to the second baseman, placing runners on the corners. Junior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) singled up the middle, plating Weinberger and advancing Bigos to third. Schwark stole second.
  • Graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) hit one to right field, collecting an RBI. Senior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) singled to center field to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Pointers loaded the bases with two outs. Shortstop Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) ended the inning with a clean ground out.
  • With two outs in the seventh, Wisconsin-Stevens Point got a runner on first and stole second. A following single to center field scored the runner to tie the game (3-3) and the throw home advanced the hitter to second. The Pointers singled to left center, scoring the runner on second and taking a 4-3 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Schwark finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base.
  • Mulato and Monahan collected RBIs.
  • Bigos hit 2-for-4, crossing the plate once.
  • Weinberger went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Mulato was in the circle for the first two innings, allowing two hits and two runs.
  • Guthy (0-5) relieved Mulato, tossing five innings with two runs allowed and three strikeouts.
     
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With two outs in the top of the first, Monahan reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a walk by Mulato. A passed ball move both runners a base. Senior Grace Gaskill (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) reached first on an error which led to Monahan crossing home plate for a 1-0 lead.
  • Manchester recorded four hits in the sixth inning to grab a 3-1 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Schwark hit 1-for-2.
  • Monahan posted the Pioneers' lone run.
  • Guthy pitched five innings with two strikeouts, allowing two runs and five hits.
  • Mulato (0-5) relived Guthy, tossing one inning with two hits allowed.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson returns home to play Scranton on Tuesday, March 26 for a 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. doubleheader at Pioneer Softball Field.
