Softball Bested by Wellesley and Smith

CLERMONT, FL. – The William Paterson softball team (0-6) wrapped up day two of the Spring Games, falling to Wellesley (3-2), 13-3, and Smith (3-3), 5-0 on March 18.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A bunt to get on base and two consecutive sacrifice bunts to push the runner to third gave Wellesley the opportunity to get on the board first in the top of the third. The Blues capitalized with a double to left field, leading 1-0.
  • In the fourth, Wellesley extended their lead with a single, walk and double (3-0). The runner on second advanced on a wild pitch and scored another run for the Blues on a fielding error (4-0).
  • Junior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) helped WP cut the deficit in the fourth, opening the inning with a single up the middle. Graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) singled to right center, pushing Schwark to third. Freshman Samantha Campos (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) pinch ran for Monahan and stole second. With one out, sophomore Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) reached first on a throwing error, plating Schwark and pushing Campos and herself a base (4-1).
  • With runners on second and third, sophomore Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) reached on a fielder's choice and collected an RBI to cut the deficit to two (4-2).
  • Wellesley grabbed four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for a seven-run advantage (9-2).
  • Two hits and two errors allowed the Blues to secure a 13-2 lead in the seventh.
  • In a last chance effort, freshman Joy Shand (Canton, Conn./Canton) opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk. With two outs, graduate student Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) collected a triple to score Shand, cutting the deficit 13-3. The Blues held on to take the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Bigos finished 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Schwark went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Campos and Shand each crossed the plate.
  • Backo collected an RBI.
  • Sophomore Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) (0-2) pitched three innings with one strikeout while allowing five hits and two runs.
  • Senior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) relieved Guthy, collecting two strikeouts in two innings pitched.
  • Sophomore Kylie Anthony (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) was in the circle for the last two innings, allowing two hits.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Smith plated one in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 advantage.
  • WP almost cut the deficit in the fourth with two singles, but with two outs a fielder's choice would close out the inning.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Smith collected one more run with a double and single (5-0). They held on to the lead the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Bythrow finished 2-for-3 and Gaskill went 1-for-2.
