Softball Drops Twin Bill at Drew to Open 2024 Season

MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (0-2) was blanked in its double-header season opener at Drew (6-3), falling 10-2 in game one and 8-3 in game two on March 14.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the first, with two outs, graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) singled up the middle. Senior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) followed up with a triple to plate Monahan.
  • Junior Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) scored Mulato with a single down the left-field line to put the Pioneers up 2-0.
  • Drew plated two in the fourth and added four insurance runs in the fifth (6-2).
  • The Rangers scored four more in the sixth inning for a 10-2 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan finished 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored.
  • Mulato went 1-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored.
  • Junior Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) secured one RBI, going 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) (0-1) pitched five innings with two strikeouts.
     
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Drew took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a double and single.
  • In the second, Bythrow singled through the left side and advanced on a single by senior Grace Gaskill (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert). Sophomore Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) pushed both Bythrow and Gaskill into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line.
  • Junior Haley Weinberger (Williamstown, N.J./Hammonton) and graduate student Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) walked to plate Bythrow (1-1).
  • The Rangers placed a runner on first, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the left side to take a 2-1 advantage in the third.
  • Drew secured an additional four runs in the fourth (6-1).
  • The Pioneers cut the deficit to four with a triple by Bigos and a double down the left-field line by Monahan (6-2).
  • Two sixth-inning runs extended the Rangers' lead to six (8-2).
  • Junior Cortney Schwark kicked off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk by Monahan. Mulato singled up the middle, plating Schwark.
  • Bythrow followed up with a single to load the bases but it was not enough for a comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Mulato hit 3-for-4, posting a double and a run scored.
  • Bigos finished with a triple, RBI and one run scored.
  • Schwark and Bythrow went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
  • Monahan collected an RBI with a double.
  • Mulato (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six runs and six hits. Guthy relieved her, pitching 1.2 innings with a strikeout and one hit allowed.
  • Sophomore Kylie Anthony (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) pitched the last inning of the game, allowing three hits and two runs.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels to Clermont, Fl. for the Spring Games, opening the week up on Sun. March 17 at 9:00 a.m. against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and 11:15 a.m. versus Tufts.
