Softball's NJAC Tournament Ends in Second Round

Pioneers Fall to Fifth-Seeded Kean, 5-2

UNION, N.J. – Sixth-seeded William Paterson (23-15-1, 7-10-1 NJAC) saw its season come to an end with a 5-2 loss to fifth-seeded Kean (27-15, 9-9 NJAC) May 9 in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament.
 

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Kean seized a 2-0 advantage in the top half of the first with three singles. The Cougars extended their lead to four in the second inning.
  • In the third, sophomore Jaelynn Miller (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills) relieved freshman Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg), pitching a hitless inning.
  • WP cut the deficit in the third, 4-2. With two outs, graduate student Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second. Graduate student Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) singled up the middle to plate Vera. Graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) followed with a single to right center and advanced to second on a throwing error to the plate, scoring McDaniel.
  • Miller pitched her second-hitless inning in the fourth with one strikeout.
  • The Cougars scored the final run in the sixth with a walk, fielder's choice and single for a 5-2 advantage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McDaniel posted a RBI and one run scored. Vera posted a run.
  • Monahan and junior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) both finished 2-for-2, Mulato added a stolen base.
  • Guthy (9-6) started in the circle, pitching 1.2 innings while allowing six hits, four runs and posting a strikeout.
  • Miller relieved, tossing 5.1 innings with three hits, one run and recording three strikeouts. She finished the season with 80 strikeouts, placing her 10th on the WP career-pitching records with 193 strikeouts.
  • The 2023 softball team recorded a WP team record of 99 stolen bases this season. McDaniel and Vera led the Pioneers with a combined 44 stolen bases.
