Second-Half Rally Carries Football to 27-20 Triumph

Pioneers Score 20 Unanswered Points to Defeat Keystone

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – Twenty unanswered second-half points carried the William Paterson football team (2-1) to a 27-20 victory against visiting Keystone (0-3) Sept. 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 22-yard RJ Massey (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) punt return set up the Pioneers at the Keystone-25, and junior running back Rasheed Woods (Seaford, Del./Cape Henlopen) immediately found the end zone for the Pioneers. Sophomore Jorge Leones (South Plainfield N.J./South Plainfield) kicked the PAT and William Paterson owned a 7-0 lead with 9:38 to play in the first quarter.
  • The Giants' next offensive snap went for a 67-yard touchdown pass play and a 7-7 score.
  • A Keystone blocked punt and 22-yard return handed the Giants a 14-7 edge with 7:11 remaining in the first half.
  • Keystone returned an interception 45 yards to the end zone, but senior defensive lineman Matt Gore (Washington, D.C./Crossland) blocked the extra-point attempt, leaving it a 20-7 margin 2:22 before halftime.
  • Junior linebacker Alajuwon Bell (Paterson, N.J./Garrett Morgan Academy) ended Keystone's first drive of the second half with an interception near midfield, and freshman running back Nazir Dale (Camden, N.J./Brimm Medical Arts) finished off the drive with a two-yard run up the middle to cut the lead to 20-14 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.
  • On fourth-and-five from the KC-18, junior quarterback Mele' Stallings (Newark, Del./Newark) found junior wide receiver Taz Burton (Millville, N.J./Bridgeton) on the left edge of the end zone. Leones' PAT broke the deadlock, nudging the Pioneers ahead by a 21-20 count with 9:36 to play in the fourth period.
  • Senior linebacker Nazier Wright's (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) sack and forced fumble on third-and-nine led to a punt during the Giants' next drive. During Keystone's following possession, junior defensive back Tyrell Wigfall (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Twp.) pulled down an interception and returned it 23 yards to the KC-21, getting the Pioneers the ball with 1:40 remaining.
  • Dale's 15-yard rush right provided WP with some breathing room at 27-20 (0:47), but a blocked extra point allowed Keystone to hold out hope. However, junior linebacker Samod Wingo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) secured the Pioneer victory with his interception with 39 seconds left.
