Field Hockey Takes NJAC Tournament Title with 2-1 Victory

Pioneers Defeat Ramapo in Championship Game Behind Goals from Wilson, Viola

WAYNE, N.J. – Third-seeded William Paterson (3-2, 1-2 NJAC) earned its fourth New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Field Hockey Tournament title in program history with a 2-1 victory April 10 against fourth-seeded Ramapo (0-2, 0-1 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Roadrunners struck first with a pass to the left post and finish in the ninth minute.
  • The Pioneers leveled the score 15 minutes later when sophomore Catie Wilson (Oaklyn, N.J./Collingswood) converted an Abigail Viola (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) pass to the right post, her second goal of the season.
  • Viola provided the game winner at the 45:38 mark, picking up a pass from junior Alicia Mitchell (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) and making a run down the middle of the field before beating the Ramapo goalie.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Emily Hoagland (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) collected three saves for the Pioneers.
  • The Pioneers won their fourth conference title (1973, 1975, 1977, 2020-21).
  • Five teams started the NJAC field hockey season, but two (Montclair State, Kean) were unable to play an NJAC Tournament game due to COVID protocols.
