Pioneers Defeat Gothic Knights During Season Finale

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (7-9-2, 2-6-1 NJAC) closed out its 2021 season with a 2-1 Senior Night victory against New Jersey City (8-9-1, 0-9 NJAC) Oct. 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior forward Opeoluwa Olaloko (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) launched a throw-in to the middle of the box and senior midfielder Chris Laccetti (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) used his body to force the ball across the goal like, handing the Pioneers a 1-0 edge 1:12 into the contest.
  • The Gothic Knights were awarded a penalty kick in the 55th minute that WP junior Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) saved with a dive to his right, but NJCU cleaned up the rebound for the equalizer.
  • William Paterson had its own penalty kick opportunity in the 62nd minute, and senior forward Jacob Von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) buried it inside the right post for the game winner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Prior to the match, WP honored its seniors Ryan Goggins (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), Laccetti, Martin Menendez (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional), Anthony Nole (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) and Von Giebel.
