Men’s Soccer Takes Early Command but Ultimately is Forced to Settle for 4-4 Draw

Pioneers Build 3-0 Lead Against FDU-Florham

WAYNE, N.J. – Leading by three goals less than a minute into the second half, the William Paterson men's soccer team (0-2-1) was forced to settle for a 4-4 double-overtime draw against FDU-Florham (1-0-1) during the Pioneers' home opener Sept. 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The speed of senior forward Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) proved difficult to handle for the Devil defense, resulting in a pair of penalty kicks. The first came after a defender ran up the back of a streaking Brant-Sharp in the 19th minute, and classmate Jordan Saling (Haledon, N.J./Paramus Catholic) buried the PK for a 1-0 edge.
  • Junior midfielder Martin Menendez (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) played a long ball into the box, and after a poor clearance, junior forward/midfielder Chris Fuentes (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) pounced on the loose ball for his ninth career goal and a 2-0 score at the 31:47 mark.
  • Brant-Sharp was pushed down in the box from behind seconds into the second half, resulting in Saling's second penalty kick goal of the night and a 3-0 advantage.
  • FDU-Florham got on the board in the 52nd minute with the finish of a bouncing ball in front of the mouth of the goal.
  • Senior forward/midfielder Kyle Adams (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) bent a corner kick from the left flagstick that the keeper could not corral, making it a 4-1 game at the 60:36 mark.
  • The Devils' Salvatore Vassallo just beat the defense to a ball played from wide into the box, knocking it into the net in the 63rd minute.
  • A blast from distance into the left side netting cut it to a 4-3 margin in the 82nd minute for FDU-Florham, and the Devils netted the equalizer with 52 seconds remaining in regulation with a finish of a rebound.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) made one save for the Pioneers.
  • WP nearly had the game winner with less than two minutes remaining in the first extra session, but FDU-Florham came up with the save of a lunging header by freshman back/forward Johnny Gadaleta (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough).

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will take on Mount Saint Mary Friday, Sept. 6, at 4:00 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
