Action-Packed Second Half Ends with 1-0 Men’s Soccer Victory Against New Jersey City

Agyeman Scores Winner in 69th Minute for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – An action-packed second half ended with a 1-0 William Paterson men's soccer (4-3-2, 1-0-1 NJAC) home conference victory against New Jersey City (9-2, 0-2 NJAC) Sept. 28.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman forward Yachine Wahnon (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) played a ball from the right side toward sophomore midfielder Ryan Goggins (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), who layed a quick touch off for freshman forward Osei Agyemang (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) in the middle, and he found the inside of the right post at the 68:41 mark for the lone goal of the day.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) collected a season-best seven saves for his first shutout.
  • Despite the Pioneers controlling the majority of the run of play, the two teams were scoreless at halftime. It looked like that would change 12 minutes into the second half when a NJCU shot was blocked in the center of the box, but the Pioneer defender was whistled for a hand ball. Senior Joe Burgos stepped to the spot and sent his penalty kick low towards the left post, but Hatch made a diving stop to deny the Gothic Knights.
  • WP nearly broke the deadlock with 24 minutes remaining, but a shot by senior forward Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) was saved, and NJCU keeper Aldahir Cazun did just enough to stop Goggins' follow before a defender cleared it away.
  • The Pioneers had a penalty kick of its own, but Cazun turned away a Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) attempt low right in the 82nd minute.
  • New Jersey City was awarded a corner kick during the waning seconds, and a flurry at the far post was kept out of the net by several different Pioneers as the final seconds of the match ticked away.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels down Rt. 46 to square off against Montclair State Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7:00 p.m.
