KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Sophomore lefty
Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) tossed a complete-game shutout of UMASS Boston to help lead William Paterson softball (4-2) to an opening 5-0 victory, but the Pioneers fell in game two to Arcadia, 3-1, at The Spring Games.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS UMASS BOSTON:
- Following a single from junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), Massaro launched a two-run homer that gave WP an early 2-0 advantage in its first at-bat.
- In the top of the second, freshman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) reached on a hit by pitch. After freshman pinch runner Crystal Arendas (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) stole second, back-to-back infield singles by junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and junior second baseman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) loaded the bases for Archibold, who delivered an RBI-single up the middle to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Sophomore shortstop Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) singled in freshman Janaya Espino (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) lifted a sacrifice fly to right center that plated Pace, handing the Pioneers a 5-0 edge after three frames.
- The early scoring surge was more than enough for Massaro, who twirled a complete-game, seven-hit shutout to improve her record to a perfect 2-0 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS ARCADIA:
- Arcadia struck first with a two-out RBI single in the home half of the fourth to claim a 1-0 edge.
- The Knights extended their lead to fifth, adding a pair of runs via a fielding error and run-scoring single.
- WP would conclude the scoring in the top of the sixth as Massaro connected on a run-scoring single that plated Archibold.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Massaro has registered an RBI in all six contests this season and leads the team with 11.
- Archibold finished the day 4-for-6 and has multiple hit in four straight contests.
