Senior Day Win Against Lehman, 106-98, Begins 2018 for Women’s Swimming and Diving

WP’s Lone Senior Swimmer, Katelyn Diva, Won Her First Collegiate Individual Meet On Senior Day

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J.  – In William Paterson women's swimming and diving's first meet back from its winter break training trip in Trinidad, the Pioneers (9-1) honored senior Katelyn Diva (North Haledon, N.J./Paramus Catholic) for Senior Day all the while opening the 2018 half of the season with a 106-98 victory against visiting Lehman (2-8) Jan. 13.

Apropos to the occasion, Diva won her first career individual event, securing the 200 free (2:20.49) behind a staggering 31.43 seconds margin of victory.

In all, seven Pioneers won individual events against Lehman, led by double winners junior Casey Murphy (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) and sophomore diver Ashley Lawler (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional).

Murphy wasted no time in her first meet in return from an injury suffered in the 2017 half of the season, touching first in the 1,000 free (12:28.31) and 500 free (6:04.57). Eighteen individual points were also accrued by Lawler, who registered a 189.46 in the one-meter and 202.21 in the three-meter dives.

Leading the pack in the 50 free was junior Quinn Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran) (27.20), ousting freshman teammate Iris Santos (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) who placed second (27.35). Santos had her own first-place finish on the day though, garnering nine points with a 59.65 in the 100 free.

Also posting first-place times were sophomore Mariah Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) and junior Christianne Joyce Pineda (Haskell, N.J./Hackensack). Jenkins won the 100 breast (1:21.66), edging out Pineda's second-place posting (1:22.38), although Pineda was the fastest swimmer in the 100 fly (1:08.41).

The WP women closed out their events by taking home the 200 free behind the quartet of Murphy, Santos, sophomore Janice Costa (Clifton, N.J./Bergen Arts and Science) and Reynolds. Murphy posted the fastest split (26.80) amongst the group.

The Pioneers haven't lost in over two months now and will carry their 9-1 record into a home meet against SUNY Cobleskill (3-5) Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 6:00 p.m.
