PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Second-seeded William Paterson (28-13) had multiple chances to score but couldn't capitalize, suffering a 2-0 loss to fourth-seeded Penn State Behrend (27-13) May 13 in an elimination game of the NCAA Softball Tournament Rochester Regional.
The Pioneers stranded 11 base runners during the contest, including first and second with no one out during the top of the third inning, and bases loaded with zero outs in the fourth. WP also had runners on the corners with one out in the fifth, and got one runner aboard with one out during both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Lions broke the scoreless deadlock during the bottom of the sixth, using a leadoff base hit and error, and a one-out single coupled with a Pioneer miscue that allowed the run to safely cross the plate. Another base hit was followed by a wild pitch that made it a 2-0 margin.
Six different players came up with singles for the Pioneers. Senior starter
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) tossed 5.1 innings and was charged with two runs on nine hits, striking out two (15-5). Classmate
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) pitched the final 0.2 inning, surrendering a wild pitch.
Junior left fielder
Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) was named to the Rochester All-Regional Team after finishing a combined 2-for-5 with a triple, home run, RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore first baseman Kristen Kargol went 2-for-2 for the Lions. Junior Alexa Bupp earned the win with 3.0 innings of shutout relief, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out three (3-3).
