Podmajersky Throws Five-Inning No-Hitter as No. 18 Softball Cruises To Pair of 8-0 Wins

Pioneers Sweep Visiting DeSales

WAYNE, N.J. – The No. 18 William Paterson softball team (22-8) took both ends of a doubleheader, 8-0 in five innings, against the visiting DeSales Bulldogs (11-21) April 20. The Pioneers were led by a no-hitter from senior righty Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) in game one and a 12-hit outbreak in game two.

Game One
Podmajersky sat down 15 of 17 DeSales batters while fanning six on the way to a five-inning no-hitter, and the Pioneers broke out for a seven-run fourth inning as it cruised to an 8-0 victory in game one against DeSales.

WP broke the 0-0 stalemate by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) started the frame with a single up the middle. Senior center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) bunted Pellios over to second base before senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) plated Pellios with an RBI-single back through the box, one batter after senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drew a walk.

That was all Podmajersky needed as she retired 14 consecutive DeSales batters after allowing a walk and another baserunner to reach on an error in the first inning.

The Pioneers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, generating seven runs on five hits, with a double and triple coming off the bat of sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional). Griffith led off by hooking a leadoff double inside the left-field line. Junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) laid down a bunt and reached safely after the throw to first was mishandled by the DeSales second baseman, advancing Griffith to third base. Junior second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) brought both Pioneers home with a two-RBI double into right-center field, and was brought home just a batter later when senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) rolled an RBI-single through the left side of the infield. Pellios then bunted and reached after DeSales' first baseman dropped the throw over from third base. Lutas walked to load the bases before freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) launched an RBI-single into left field, scoring Kim Fryer.

Up 5-0, Griffith bookended her two-hit inning with a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple, hit into deep center field to give the Pioneers the decisive 8-0 lead. Freshman pinch runner Lexi Reale (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Lutas and Archibold all came around to score on the triple.

Podmajersky (7-6) earned the win, working 5.0 innings while fanning six. With six punchouts in game one, Podmajersky has 423 career strikeouts, just one strikeout shy of tying the WP all-time record for strikeouts, held by Jenn Scott (2003-06). It also was her second WP no-hitter, as she was one walk away from a perfect game during a 5-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament first-round victory against The College of New Jersey (4/28/15).

Griffith led WP with three RBI, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple and one run scored. Archibold also went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Poretti contributed two RBI.

Junior pitcher Andrea Artesani (5-7) took the loss, allowing eight runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks while fanning two in 4.0 innings in the circle.

Game Two
WP had nine batters record at least one hit and senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) pitched her way to her 13th win behind 4.0 scoreless innings as the Pioneers won the night cap, 8-0, in five innings.

WP continued where it left off in game one by plating two in the bottom half of the first inning. Nicole Fryer roped a single up the middle to begin the inning. Archibold took advantage of a charging infield by pushing a bunt to the vacated area at second base, advancing Fryer all the way to third, and Archibold moved up to second base on the same play as DeSales attempted to throw Nicole Fryer out. Wasilak plated Nicole Fryer with an RBI-single to left field and a successful first-and-third double steal allowed Archibold to come across for WP's second run.

Two more Pioneer runs were tacked on in the bottom of the third inning. Archibold flared a single into left field and was brought all the way home from first when Wasilak split the right-center field gap with an RBI-double. Griffith tallied her third extra-base hit of the day, driving an RBI-double into center field to score Wasilak and give WP the 4-0 lead.

William Paterson widened its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Pellios and Lutas singled and Nicole Fryer walked to load the bags. Freshman pinch hitter Amanda Clark (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) pulled a two-RBI single into right field, knocking in Pellios and Lutas. A wild pitch brought Nicole Fryer to third base and freshman pinch hitter Alex Lee (Newark, N.J./Benedictine Academy) legged out an infield RBI-single to third base, scoring Nicole Fryer. Freshman right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) completed WP's scoring, recording an RBI-groundout to score Archibold, who came in as a pinch runner.

Castelli improved to 13-2, scattering three hits across 4.0 scoreless innings while striking out three. Freshman Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) struck out two of the three batters she faced during the top of the fifth.

Archibold went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, giving her a combined 4-for-6 performance with four runs and two RBI during the doubleheader sweep. Wasilak was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run, and Lutas added a run scored to a 2-for-2 game at the plate.

Taking the loss for DeSales was junior righty Hailey Warner (4-9), allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out one. Freshman Shannon Hill worked 1.0 inning in relief, surrendering one earned run on two hits.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman second baseman Erin Redden, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Sophomore catcher Sunny Greenberg and senior center fielder Alexa Beaumont added one single apiece.

William Paterson will travel to No. 5 Rowan Saturday, April 22, for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
