Softball Defeats Carroll, Loses to Illinois College

Pioneers Take 6-0 Victory Before 1-0 Loss

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (4-4) earned a 6-0 victory against Carroll, Wisc. (6-6) before dropping a 1-0 decision to Illinois College (5-3) March 15 at the Rebel Spring Games.

Game One
Five runs during the bottom of the second inning carried WP to a 6-0 win.

Junior second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) hit a one-out single through the left side and junior center fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) walked before senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) delivered an RBI-single to left. A double steal and strikeout led to a two-run base hit into left field by senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), and an infield single from freshman left fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) and an error plated two more runs for a 5-0 edge.

William Paterson added one more in the sixth after an error, Pellios base hit, Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) base on balls, fielder's choice and passed ball.

Pellios went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Archibold finished 2-for-4 and scored once.

Castelli (3-0) tossed a three-hitter, striking out 10 batters without issuing a walk.

Freshman center fielder Rosalie Jrolf was 2-for-3 for Carroll. Classmate Amanda Osterhus (3-2) gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks, posting seven strikeouts.

Game Two
A walkoff single scored the game's only run as Illinois College was a 1-0 winner.

The Pioneers had their best scoring chance during the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded with one out, but a strikeout and flyout ended the frame.

A leadoff single, sacrifice, infield base hit and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Lady Blues with one out in the seventh, and sophomore left fielder Jackie Reilly drove across the winning run with a single to second base.

Poretti, senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), sophomore third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), freshman pinch hitter Susan Mather (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and senior pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) each had a hit.
