Softball Gets Solid Pitching Efforts in Pair of Wins

Pioneers Defeat Plattsburgh State and Wheaton

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – A pair of solid pitching performances allowed the William Paterson softball team (3-1) to register a pair of victories March 12 at the Rebel Spring Games, defeating Plattsburgh State (2-4), 3-2, and Wheaton, Mass. (1-3), 3-0.

Game One
Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) allowed just two unearned runs as WP posted a 3-2 win against Plattsburgh State.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first with a two-run first inning thanks to a single, error, fielder's choice and sacrifice fly.

The Pioneers scored all three of their runs during the top of the seventh. Senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off with a base hit to center field and freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) walked before consecutive RBI-singles by senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and sophomore left fielder Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional). Junior shortstop Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) pushed across the winning run with a bunt that drove in Griffith from third base.

Nicole Fryer was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Castelli (2-0) scattered five hits over 7.0 innings, striking out two.

Five different players accounted for Plattsburgh State's hits. Junior Katie Pitkin (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits and six walks while posting two strikeouts.

Game Two
Senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed a two-hitter as WP finished the day with a 3-0 victory against Wheaton.

The Pioneers scored a single run during their first at-bat when Archibold hit an infield single, stole second and third, and touched home when Poretti forced a throw during a first-and-third situation.

Junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) made it 2-0 in the second after reaching base on a fielder's choice and scoring after two Wheaton errors.

Back-to-back base hits by sophomore third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) and Molnar, a groundout and a sacrifice fly by freshman pinch hitter Amanda Clark (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) finished the scoring during the bottom of the fourth inning.

Greulich was 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Archibold was 2-for-3, stole three bases and scored a run. Molnar finished 2-for-3 and scored once.

Podmajersky (1-1) struck out five and walked two during the complete-game shutout.

Senior pitcher Danielle Cimino was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lyons, and allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out two (0-1).

William Paterson will take on No. 18 Trine at 11:15 a.m. and Illinois Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 13, at the Rebel Spring Games.
