Men’s Soccer Edged in Back-and-Forth Affair With Kean, 2-1

Gonzales Records Highlight Reel Goal in Loss

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J.  – Senior midfielder JP Gonzalez provided a highlight-worthy goal to tie the game in the second half, and senior goalkeeper Tim Morris (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) made a pair of stellar saves in goal, although William Paterson men's soccer (9-3-1, 3-2-0 NJAC) couldn't muster enough firepower as they were edged by Kean (5-5-1, 1-4-0 NJAC) Oct. 7, 2-1.

The Cougars were on the offensive first, taking the 1-0 upper hand in the seventh minute when senior back Eder Solano gathered a bouncing ball in the upper right corner of the box and sent a one-timer into the opposite pocket of the goal for the early advantage.

The Pioneers evened it up in the 52nd minute on a bullet of shot off the foot of senior midfielder JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech). Taking a pass out of the box from sophomore midfielder Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield), Gonzales sized up the shot and nestled it into the upper-left corner of the frame, tying the game at one apiece.

WP threatened with a series of shots over the next 15 minutes, although Kean regained the lead for good in the 71st minute when junior forward Vinceroy Nelson took a through ball from Solano and beat WP senior goalkeeper Tim Morris (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) to the left post.

Morris showcased his athleticism on two challenging plays, helping keep the Pioneers deficit to just one. In the 41st minute, Morris made a fully-extended dive to deflect the shot of junior midfielder Nicholas Sica in the 82nd minute, and then in the 82nd minute he raced back into the box after being pulled out of position and beat Kean's Nelson by punching wide a header attempt.

The Pioneers had a couple of good chances in the second half, although junior goalkpeer Derek Phells was there to stifle the opportunities. Quaye responded just minutes after Gonzales' goal with a powerful shot from inside the box that Phells punched aside. Sophomore midfielder Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) put two more shots on goal in the successive minutes, one that sailed high and another that Phells defended as the clocked began to tick off in Kean's favor.

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Altieri (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) made his fourth start for the Pioneers, registering 18:53 while permitting the irst Kean goal. Morris suffered the loss, completing the remaining 71:07 at goal. Phells made four saves for the Cougars.

Men's soccer makes the short trip to Montclair State to face the Red Hawks (9-3-1, 3-1-0 NJAC) Wednesday, Oct. 11, with the opening whistle set for 7:00 p.m.
