Four Double Winners Boost Women’s Swimming and Diving by Baruch, 113-106

Reynolds, Murphy, Santos and Lawler Win Two Events in Second-Straight Win

Junior Casey Murphy was one of four double winners for the Pioneers during the 113-106 win vs. Baruch.
WAYNE, N.J.  –  A well-rounded effort from the William Paterson women's swimming and diving team catalyzed the Pioneers' 113-106 victory against visiting Baruch (0-1) Oct. 24, giving WP (2-0) a perfect start to its season-opening home stand.

WP had four double winners on the evening thanks to the efforts of junior Quinn Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran), junior Casey Murphy (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional), freshman Iris Santos (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and sophomore-diver Ashley Lawler (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional).

Murphy gave WP its first individual victory of the meet, prevailing in the 1,000 free (12:17.02), nearly a minute faster than sophomore Andrea Gasic of Baruch. Murphy tallied her second victory of the night when she won the 500 free (5:54.12), besting Baruch's junior freestyler, Wendy Ambrosio (6:19.33).

Reynolds had her second-straight double-winning outing, winning the 50 free (26.54) by clipping freshman Amanda Lee of Baruch by .04 second. Reynolds posted another nine points to WP's score when she won the 100 back (1:04.50) by 8.80 seconds.

Santos kept her strong start as a freshman going, winning the 200 free (2:11.43) and 100 free (58.20) with a pair of strong times. She was also a key cog in WP's 200 free relay victory (1:47.01), swimming a 26.59 in her split as the third swimmer in WP's quartet. She was joined by Murphy, freshman Kelsey Vespe (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Audubon) and Reynolds.

Lawler lifted WP during diving, claiming the one-meter dive (191.15) and three-meter dive (206.78) for 18 crucial points.

Other notable finishers for the Pioneers included sophomore Mariah Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour), who chipped in four points with a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:19.12). Vespe also came in as a runner-up in the 200 IM (2:39.16) and garnered three points with a 1:00.75 time in the 100 free.

WP won by a large margin, 130-86, against Maritime Nov. 1, 2016 and will look for a similar result when it heads to face the Privateers in the team's next meet, Oct. 31, at 6:00 p.m.
