Softball Sweeps St. Joseph’s-Long Island, 6-2 and 5-1

Wasilak Has Three Extra-Base Hits for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (21-5) cruised to a 6-2 and 5-1 sweep of visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island (14-10) April 14.

Game One
The Pioneers opened up a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win.

A walk by freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), a single up the middle by junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and an error loaded the bases, and senior first baseman Tracy Geller's (Commack, N.Y./Commack) groundout handed WP a 1-0 second-inning lead.

William Paterson added two more during the bottom of the third as sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) walked and junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drilled a base hit up the middle. Junior designated hitter Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) then popped a ball down the right-field line that was caught by the second baseman, but her momentum carried her into foul territory and the two runners were able to advance a base. A two-out error later plated two runs and WP owned a 3-0 edge.

A Kristen Arbiter single and doubles from senior designated player Mallory McClafferty and junior third baseman Gabrielle Cinquemani pulled the Golden Eagles to within one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth.

Sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) opened the home half of the fifth with a bunt that was ruled a fielder's choice when no one covered first base. A groundout and wild pitch were followed by a Kim Fryer RBI-single through the left side, and she then stole second and moved to third when Poretti sent a base hit through the right side of the infield. A throw to the second baseman was mishandled when Poretti attempted to steal second, and Kim Fryer raced home on the play for a 5-2 edge.

WP added one more score in the sixth as junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) launched a triple to right center and Lutas singled up the middle.

Wasilak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of triples and a run scored. Kim Fryer was 2-for-4 with an RBI while scoring twice.

Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) improved to 14-2 after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out 12.

Game Two
WP scored the game's first four runs for a 5-1 victory.

Wasilak opened the bottom of the first inning with a home run off the scoreboard in center field.

Lutas put down a two-out bunt single and an error on the next batted ball sent her across the plate for a 2-0 score in the third.

Pellios reached base on a dropped fly ball to start the fourth and was sacrificed to second by Greulich. Nicole Fryer followed with a single up the middle and advanced to second base on the throw home, and senior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) saw her bunt spin on the third-base line, a double that plated Pellios and left runners on second and third. Junior Gabrielle Castelli's (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) sac fly to left handed the Pioneers a 4-0 edge.

SJ-LI got on the board during the top of the fifth inning when Cinquemani was issued a leadoff base on balls, freshman shortstop Jillian McFadzen and sophomore pitcher Sandra Foster singled, and senior center fielder Lindsey Corriss hit a sac fly to center.

Greulich was hit by a pitch to start the sixth, Nicole Fryer put down a successful sac bunt and Wimmershoff dropped a run-scoring base hit into center field.

Wimmershoff finished 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, while Nicole Fryer was 2-for-2 and added a run scored.

Castelli (7-3) allowed five hits, one run and two walks while striking out 11.

Foster and McFadzen were both 2-for-3 for St. Joseph's-Long Island. Foster (2-3) gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts inside the circle.

William Paterson will play a twin bill at Ramapo Saturday, April 16, at 1:00 p.m.
