Field Hockey Can’t Hold Off Vassar, 2-1

Wetzel, Reynolds and Giammetta Named to All-Tournament Team

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Felicia Wetzel (Point Pleasant, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) gave the Pioneers an early lead but the William Paterson field hockey team (1-2) couldn't hold off the host Brewers (3-0) down the stretch, falling 2-1 in the final of Vassar's Betty Richey Tournament Sept. 5.

Wetzel finished a Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) penalty-corner pass into the right corner of the cage at the 18:42 mark, giving WP a 1-0 edge it carried into halftime.

Sophomore Storm Sideleau evened up the score when she finished a loose ball in the 62nd minute, and less than seven minutes later Vassar's Hayley Beach knocked in a shot to the right side of the goal for the game winner.

Wetzel was joined by senior midfielder McKenna Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran) and senior forward Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) on the All-Tournament Team.

Senior Meg Davies (Havertown, N.J./Haverford) made nine saves for the Pioneers, and freshman Paige Amico finished with one stop for Vassar.

William Paterson will open its home slate Wednesday, Sept. 9, against Scranton at 7:00 p.m.
